Your Answer...
Last month we asked our readers to tell us:
"Why did you decide to homeschool?"
Here is one of our favorites:
I had never been exposed to homeschooling. When my husband and I rededicated our lives to Christ, we belonged to a wonderful church. We started attending a small group, where most of the families homeschooled. That was a wonderful eye-opener!
The kiddos were so polite and kind. I started to pray and research about this method of learning. (My husband was impressed by the research part... I tend to jump into things first!) I prayed and then spoke to my husband about feeling God was leading me to start homeschooling. He agreed for our family to give it try. We loved it!
This is our fourth year and we are ever-growing and learning as a family, following the Lord and making Him the center of our school and life. It's so cool to realize that we never know how our example can affect others.
Thanks CHAP, for all you do for homeschoolers! We are very blessed! Stacy, PA
Thank you Stacy, and thanks to all who submitted their reasons.
Be sure to answer this month's "Your Answer Please" question!

Penny Math
Lesson Plan Idea
When our children were young, I heard about an interesting way to get your school day started: Penny Math. This caught my eye, because our oldest simply wasn't a morning person. (She still isn't!)
The idea of this 'game' is to set a time each morning when everyone must be ready in order to play. I chose 9 a.m., hoping that everyone (including me) could have their morning chores done by then. Everyone who was ready on time could play that day. Being ready meant that you were sitting at the kitchen table-with a pencil in hand-when the cuckoo clock began to strike 9:00.
And so, at 9:00 each weekday morning, math worksheets suitable to the age of each student were passed out at our kitchen table. We used a combination of photocopies and laminated wipe-off practice sheets. I set the timer for a different amount of time each day-from 30 seconds to 5 minutes-and shouted, "Go!" When the timer went off, pencils went down.
Now we passed the sheets to the person next to us. With an answer sheet in hand, even a first-grader could correct a page of algebra problems! When each page had been corrected, the number of correct answers was written at the top. I kept a tally of how many correct answers each student had given throughout the week. When we took Dad's paycheck to the bank on Friday afternoon, each child was paid one penny for each correct answer. This was very motivating and never cost more than $5 a
week. This game helped us in at least three ways: We practiced our math facts every day.
We learned to work under a time constraint. Best of all, we developed the habit of getting our school day started at a reasonable time each morning.

Homeschooling
Sees Dramatic Rise in Popularity
This quote from an article by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank and great resource, shares the importance of homeschool organizations such as CHAP in facilitating the continued growth of homeschooling. Thank you for helping us continue this important work through your prayers, memberships, and donations--we couldn't do what we do without you!
"The continued growth in homeschooling is facilitated by organizations that assist families with needs ranging from curriculum and instruction to advancing legislation that ensures the freedom to educate children in the home. These burgeoning networks demonstrate that homeschooling is becoming an increasingly viable option for families."

National Pro Life
Tee Shirt Day
"I was recently chatting with a teen who related a story of wearing her Tee shirt at Great Adventure in New Jersey. While she was standing in line for a ride, a girl behind her struck up a conversation about the shirt she was wearing. You guessed it, it was a pro-life Tee shirt purchased through our church for pro-life Tee shirt day. The girl was 18, unmarried and pregnant and planning an abortion for the following week. PRAISE GOD, the Tee shirt opened a dialogue and the she reconsidered her choice
and planned to place her baby for adoption. One never knows what God will use to achieve HIS purposes," so writes Anne Marie McAlester, one of the local coordinators for National Pro Life Tee Shirt Day. This is a great ministry opportunity for homeschooling co-ops and families. The tee shirts must be ordered before February 26, 2009. On April 28, 2009, everyone who has one will wear it then and beyond!
Please consider purchasing a Tee shirt to silently express your position on Sanctity of Human Life.
